Find More About Vidocq
What is the Vidocq Society? The Society was founded in 1990 in Philadelphia, PA, to further the resolution of long unsolved homicides. It is made up of volunteer forensic experts and investigators who serve as confidential consultants to assist law enforcement in solving difficult cold cases.
Eugène-François Vidocq (French: [vidɔk] ; July 24, 1775 – May 11, 1857) was a French criminal turned criminalist whose life story inspired several writers, including Victor Hugo, Edgar Allan Poe, and Honoré de Balzac.
Vidocq was a real historical personage, and a genuine founder of modern French criminology - though this is a highly fictionalised part of a part of his life, inspired by the 'orrible crimes of contemporary penny dreadfuls and the likes of Spring Heeled Jack, than by any real facts.
As a former convict, Vidocq uses his knowledge of criminals and their methods to solve crimes.
François Vidocq, (born July 24, 1775, Arras, Fr.—died May 11, 1857, Paris), adventurer and detective who helped create the police de sûreté (“security police”) in France. A venturesome, sometimes rash youth, Vidocq had bright beginnings in the army, fighting in the Battles of Valmy and Jemappes in 1792.
Following the mysterious disappearance of a legendary 19th-century French detective, a determined journalist sets out to write the sleuth's life story. Gérard Depardieu stars in this fascinating ...
In 1830 Paris, private investigator Eugène Vidocq pursues a man who is wearing a mirrored mask. The man lures Vidocq into a furnace room at a glass factory, and pushes him into the furnace. Hanging onto the ledge, Vidocq asks him to reveal his face. The masked man obliges, and Vidocq lets go, falling into the fire.
François Eugène Vidocq The first private detective we have any record of supposedly killed his first man at fourteen. I say "supposedly" because almost everything we know about VIDOCQ comes from Vidocq himself. Like Allan Pinkerton who followed in his footsteps, part of his legacy was a, well, less-than-modest account of his own life.
