Desperate forhis art to survive, THE KING OF MASKS finds an apprentice in a destitute child purchased on the black market. When the child reveals an unexpected secret, their relationship is suddenly tested by both the old man's stubborn sense of tradition and the established customs of China.
The King of Masks Wang Bianlian, an aging lonely street performer, is known as the King of Mask for his mastery of the dying art form, Sichuan, the rapid-changing face mask technique. Then, one night after a performance Wang is sold a young boy "Doggie" to train him as his protégé. All is well until Doggie is found out to be a girl.
In 1930's China, Wang is The King of Masks, an aged street performer who practices the change-mask opera art of bian lian. He laments that he has no male heirs to carry on his mysterious and complicated art and trade. At an illegal child market, Wang buys what he believes to be an orphan boy to become his adopted grandson and apprentice.
"The King of Masks" was directed by Wu Tianming, who as a studio head in the 1980s helped bring the Fifth Generation of Chinese filmmakers to prominence. After the Tiananmen Square revolt, he moved to the United States and returned in 1995.
